Forum # 3 (Ethics)

Topic 1:

I feel that Minimizing Harm is the most important aspect of the Society of Professional Journalists' "Code of Ethics."

The opening words, "Ethical journalism treats sources, subjects, colleagues and members of the public as human beings deserving of respect." echo into deep beliefs that I have. Raised with the focused mindset of respecting authority and treating others how I would like to be treated; I feel that journalists ought to take a good deal of responsibility for their actions.

Although the general public deserves to know the truth, there are times that the truth can do significant harm, thus, should be told with caution and care, not flippantly tossed about. For example, reporting a crime committed by one or more Syrian refugees could possibly scare people away from receiving and caring for the many innocent and honest refugees entering the country. The truth is so important, it's important how you paint it.

"Show compassion for those who may be affected by news coverage." (SPJ. "Minimizing Harm")

Topic 2:

  2. Nut Graf:
    1. "The Whiteside theater (a staple in Corvallis history) is more than just a historical landmark. On a weekly basis, crowds of patrons pack in for the showings of classic movies, such as "Airplane," "Stand By Me," and "Pirates of the Caribean." Located on 3rd and Madison, this attraction reels in more than just the average moviegoer."

  4. Five Questions:
    1. How long has the Whiteside theater been showing classic movies?
    2. About how many weekly patrons are three on average?
    3. Where do the profits from this event go?
    4. Who chooses the movies that are shown?
    5. What is the history of the Whiteside theater?
